A Glimpse into Our Community

Welcome to the Queer Shia Collective, a vibrant and inclusive space created by and for Queer Shias. We are a diverse community of individuals united by our commitment to fostering a judgment-free, Shia-centric, and 2SLGBTQIA+ sanctuary where every voice is valued and every story is celebrated. We proudly embrace Shias of all backgrounds, experiences, genders, and sexualities, recognizing that our rich tapestry of identities is what makes us extraordinary. At the Queer Shia Collective, we stand against oppression, imperialism, racism, shiaphobia, and islamophobia as we unite under the banner of love for the Ahl al-Bayt.

  • Abrar (she/they)

    FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

I am a Queer Bahraini, deeply rooted in the indigenous history of Bahrain, a land whose people have long resisted colonial influences. My journey is marked by a passionate commitment to preserving the rich heritage of my homeland.

Currently, I find myself on a different continent, working on the unceded and unsurrendered traditional territories of the Algonquin Anishinabe nation. Here, I continue my quest for understanding and reconciliation, bridging the gaps between diverse cultures and histories.

My story is woven with threads of identity, resistance, and a deep love for the lands and people that have shaped me. It's a journey that embraces the past, celebrates the present, and paves the way for a more inclusive and harmonious future.

  • Saif Ali (he/him)

    ARTS COORDINATOR

I am Saif Ali, a Iraqi Shia artist and activist, embarked on a profound journey deeply rooted in the ancient history of my homeland. Hailing from the heart of Iraq, a land marred by conflict and upheaval, my path has been defined by a passionate commitment to reshaping perceptions and championing the causes that lie close to my heart.

My artistic journey began with a fascination for Arabic calligraphy, an art form traditionally reserved for sacred texts and verses. I saw the potential to break free from these conventions and breathe new life into this ancient craft by intertwining it with contemporary and sensitive topics like homosexuality, feminism, and animal rights.

Despite facing societal judgments and immense pressures to conform, I persevered, dedicating years to honing my calligraphy skills. Today, my work has garnered a substantial following, a community of supporters who share my art and shower me with messages of admiration.

In the face of adversity and hostility, I’ve continued to unfurl my artistic expression, boldly addressing subjects like homosexuality in a region where such discussions are met with fear and prejudice. These courageous stances have invited threats, criticism, and even the loss of personal connections, including cherished friendships and strained familial bonds. But I remain resolute. My belief in the transformative power of art fuels my conviction that it can empower the LGBTQ+ community and educate society about homosexuality. Through Arabic art pieces, I seek to normalize the rainbow flag, paving the way for more open conversations.

Our Logo: A Symbol of Our Roots

Our distinctive logo, crafted by talented queer Shia artist, activist and Queer Shia Collective’s Arts Coordinator, Saif Ali from Iraq, draws inspiration from the awe-inspiring architecture of Imam Hussain's (as) shrine. Within this design, we discovered a beautiful symbol that encapsulates the essence of our community and reminds us of our origins. This emblem serves as a powerful representation of our commitment to unity and the enduring legacy of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Why We Formed: Nurturing a Safe Space

The Queer Shia Collective was born out of necessity, driven by the pressing need for a safe and affirming space that is both Shia and Queer. We recognize that Queer individuals can also be devout Shias, and we refuse to compromise on either aspect of our identity. Our collective emerged to challenge the notion that these identities are mutually exclusive. We understand the profound challenges faced by Queer individuals and Shia Muslims alike, and we offer a supportive community that embraces both aspects of our multifaceted identities.

In a world marked by oppression, imperialism, racism, shiaphobia, and islamophobia, the Queer Shia Collective stands as a beacon of hope and acceptance. Together, we are writing a new narrative—one that celebrates the intersection of Queer and Shia identities and fosters a sense of belonging for all who share in our journey

Please remember that while we are a community of love and support, we are not mental health professionals or sharia experts. Our strength lies in our collective spirit, and together, we will continue to amplify Queer Shia voices and advocate for a more inclusive world. Join us in our events to celebrate the beauty of diversity within the embrace of the Ahl al-Bayt.
